LA CONSTITUCIÓN ESPAÑOLA Since its first one of 1812, Spain has had no fewer than nine constitutions, including the current one, which brought stability to Spanish political life. Drawn up by the democratically elected UCD government, the Constitución de 1978 symbolizes the spirit of reconciliation that prevailed during Spain's transition to democracy (1975-82), and has helped the country through a period of radical but peaceful change. The Constitution was ratified by Parliament on 31 October 1978 and approved by a referendum on 6 December, finally receiving the royal assent on 27 December 1978. Apart from setting forth general principles on the nature of the Spanish state, it deals with such issues as the powers of the comunidades autónomas (regional governments), the role of the Crown in a parliamentary monarchy, and the status of Spain's different languages.jurar la Constitución — to swear allegiance to the Constitution
